I also think It is a good idea. I implemented it, but I kept the background of each character cell black, to prevent confusion. I also have a fog layer so that lower levels get progressively darker. It is useful only if you are looking from very high up to very low down.
Stuck because there are no 3D FOV algorithms yet :(
